Micira fingerless mitts

After finishing the Micira-cowl there was some little skeins of Noro Silk Garden left, perfect for fingerless mittens. I knitted the two mitts at the same time in separate set of DPN's so I could make two somewhat matching mitts. Noro Silk Garden is a pleasure to work with when doing spit splicing.

My mittens are 23 cm / 9" long and 8 cm / 3.25" wide after blocking.

Ingredients:

Rowan Felted Tweed dk - approximately 20g / 70 meters
Noro Silk Garden- approximately 15 g /30 meters
4 mm DPN's
4.5 mm needle for binding off
Scrap yarn

Recipe:

Gauge is 20 x 30 st / 10 cm, unblocked.

Seed stitch:

Odd rows  *k1,p1*
Even rows *p1,k1*

Broken seed stitch:

Row 1: *k1,p1*  (Noro)
Row 2:   knit       (Rowan)
Row 3: *p1, k1* (Noro)
Row 4:   knit       (Rowan)

CO 35 st, start knitting seed stitch (k1,p1) until you have 1 stitch left. Slip it to the next needle and purl it together with the first stitch, joining the knitting to be knitted in the round. Check that you haven't twisted the knitting. Knit seed stitch for 4 rows.

Start the broken seed stitch pattern and knit until your mitten is approximately 15 cm / 6" long and the next row to be knitted is a knit row (Rowan Felted Tweed dk). Now it's time for the thumb hole - I decided to make an afterthought thumb. Take a piece of scrap yarn and knit next 6 stitches with it, transfer these stitches back to the left needle, knit them again and continue knitting the pattern.

For the other mitten do the thumb in the same way, but knit the last 6 stitches with the scrap yarn. This way the the faint seam is positioned on the palm side.

Knit until the mitten is 19 cm / 7.5" long, ending with a knit row. Now knit with Rowan felted tweed for 4 rows of seed stitch and bind off with your preferred method, I did a basic BO with 4.5 mm needles.

Pick up the stitches for the thumb by unravelling the scarp yarn. You'll have 7 stitches on the bottom needle and 6 stitches on the top needle. Attach the Rowan Felted Tweed yarn, knit in seed stitch pattern the bottom needle, pick up 3 stitches between the needles, knit the top needle and pick up 3 stitches between the needles. Now you have total 19 stitches. Knit seed stitch for 5 rows and bind off.

After knitting the cowl and these mittens I was left with 13 g of Noro Silk Garden. Maybe I'll make  a brooch or something.
